Frostburg Closes Season With Third-Straight Sweep

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State capped its 2015 softball season with a sweep of Hood, Sunday at Bobcat Field. Frostburg picked up a game one win, 7-1, before outlasting the Blazers in game two, 4-3.

The two wins mark the third-consecutive sweep for the Bobcats as they close out the season with a 24-12 overall record. Frostburg swept both Stevenson and Pitt-Greensburg earlier this week.

Aside from the afternoon's final inning of action, Frostburg starting pitchers Hannah Tavik (sophomore) and Allison Short (freshman) limited Hood to just three hits and combined for 17 strikeouts.

Tavik nearly tossed a no hitter in the opener and allowed just one unearned run. She fanned 10 batters, her second-consecutive game with 10 or more strikeouts and allowed an infield single in the seventh inning for Hood's only hit.

Meanwhile, in the second game, Short struckout seven batters and allowed just three earned runs, all in the seventh frame. She scattered just two hits over the first six innings until Hood registered four hits and three earned runs in the seventh to pull within one of Frostburg at 4-3. Short struckout the final batter for the win.

At the plate, Tavik finished 5-of-7 with two runs and an RBI, while junior Renay Aubel was 3-for-6 with four RBI and a run scored. She blasted a three-run homer in the second game as part of a four-run third inning. Sophomore Emily Harvey capped the afternoon with three hits, three RBI, a run scored and a homerun.

In game one, Frostburg did most of its damage in the fourth inning. Aubel singled home a run, junior Allison Williams drew a bases loaded walk and Harvey doubled home two runs late in the frame as FSU led 5-0.

In the sixth, freshman Sam Gatton, who scored on an error in the first, led off with a double and later scored when Tavik singled to the shortstop. Junior Lauren Capece singled home classmate Taylor Blevins for the final run.

In the nightcap, two homeruns powered the four-run fourth inning for the Bobcats. Aubel hit a towering three-run bomb to right center and Harvey smacked a solo bomb for a 4-0 cushion.

Hood's only offensive showing of the doubleheader came in the seventh when it produced three runs on four hits, but the Bobcats were able to seal the sweep when Short struckout the final batter.
