FREDERICK, Md. – The second-ranked Frostburg State baseball team pushed its winning streak to 12 games with a 5-2 victory over Hood, Wednesday afternoon.
Following their CAC title win, the Bobcats (32-3) still have two weeks of regular season baseball left and kicked off that stretch in winning fashion. FSU jumped out to an early lead as seniors Zach Weiss and Nick Walker went back-to-back with their third and fifth home runs of the season, respectively. Freshman Greg Schneider led off the game with a single to left before Weiss lifted a pitch over the left field fence to give FSU a 2-0 lead. Walker followed with a solo shot to left to push the FSU to 3-0.
Sophomore Ryan Callahan started the game on the mound for FSU and earned his third win of the year going 5.1 innings of shutout baseball. Callahan allowed just three hits and walked two while striking out eight Blazers.
Frostburg added an insurance run in the fourth as junior Jeremy Remalia grounded into a run-scoring double play with the bases loaded. The Bobcats plated their final run of the game in the top of the ninth off senior Ricky Castro's RBI-single to center to score Schneider from first.
Hood (8-23) plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth to cut the Bobcat lead to 5-2 but freshman reliever Tyler Hoffman got Dylan Johnson to fly out to center with the bases loaded to end the game. With two outs and one on, Nat Puryear singled to right to put runners on the corners before Nick Meyer worked a walk to load the bases. Cameron Esposito singled to left field to score the Blazers' first run of the game and Brooks Warrenfeltz walked to bring home Puryear for the game's final run.
Walker led the Bobcats at the plate going 3-for-5 with one RBI and a run while Weiss drove in two of the Bobcats' runs. With their three runs in the first inning, the Bobcats are now 19-0 when scoring in the first inning and 25-1 when scoring first.
Frostburg will return to the field in April 29 when the Bobcats host Mt. Aloysius for their final home games of the season. The doubleheader is set to begin at 2:00 pm.
