Women's Lax Falls To St. Mary's In CAC Tournament First Round

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – Despite just a one-goal deficit at halftime, the Frostburg State women's lacrosse team fell to St. Mary's (Md.) in the first round of the 2015 Capital Athletic Conference Tournament, 17-5, Tuesday afternoon.

The Bobcats (9-8, 3-5 CAC) had the opening goal and four of the final five in the first half, but the Seahawks (13-4, 6-2 CAC) exploded for 11 unanswered goals in the second half to put the game out of reach and advance to the semifinal round of the conference tournament.

Sophomore Charlotte Hines opened scoring for the Bobcats 2:43 into the game, but St. Mary's had the next five goal to take a 5-1 lead and an advantage that they wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the game.

Senior Malory Brunett added the next two goals, the first assisted by sophomore Megan Hart and the second unassisted, to bring FSU back within two, 5-3, with under five minutes remaining before halftime.

Tori Poffenberger found the back of the net for SMCM with exactly one minute to go, but both Hart (0:49) and sophomore Molly Hart (0:25) rounded out scoring for the Bobcats for a slim one-goal deficit at the intermission.

The Seahawks came out on fire, scoring 11 unanswered goals to put the game out of reach for FSU and earn its second victory over Frostburg in as many games, this time 17-5.

Sophomore goalkeeper Dylan Teitelbaum had a career-high 15 saves in the crease and senior Jessica Jones picked up four ground balls and four draws, both game-highs.

St. Mary's was led by Shelby Newman's four goals and one assist while goalkeeper Lexi Thorne finished the day with six saves in net.

Frostburg State will enter the upcoming ECAC Women's Lacrosse Tournament with a 9-8 overall record and a schedule will be released May 4.
