FROSTBURG, Md. - For the second-straight game, the top-seeded Frostburg State baseball team got a full nine out of their starter as senior Bennett Schiltz tossed his first complete game of the season on the way to a 5-1 Bobcat win over fourth-seeded Marymount in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament.
The win improves FSU to 29-3 on the season and knocks the Saints out of the tournament with a 13-15 record.
Frostburg jumped out to a quick lead as they plated three runs in the bottom of the first. The Bobcats have made it a habit of scoring in the first inning and are now 17-0 when putting up runs to open the game and 22-1 when scoring first. Senior Ricky Castro got the Bobcats' first hit of the game as he doubled down the left field line and came home to score on senior Nick Walker's single. Senior Ricky Brady hit his team-leading ninth home run to give FSU a 3-0 lead.
Like his left handed counterpart the day before, Schiltz was stellar in his complete game effort. The right hander scattered just seven hits while walking just one and struck out seven.
Marymount got its only run of the game in the seventh when Brandon Savage singled to bring home Ryan Blake from second.
Frostburg quickly got the run back in the bottom of the seventh as Castro singled-home freshman Greg Schneider. FSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to push its lead to 5-1. Walker reached on a Saint fielding error and moved to third on Brady's second hit of the game. Junior Zach Keeler sent a ball just deep enough to center to bring home Walker on a sacrifice fly to seal the game's scoring.
Schiltz gave up a lead-off hit to start the ninth but got the next three Saints to end the game and earn his ninth win for FSU.
Castro led the team with three hits while Brady and Walker each collected a pair of hits while Brady drove in a pair of runs.
Frostburg State returns to action tomorrow morning at 9:00 am when the Bobcats play the winner of the #2 Salisbury/#3 Mary Washington game.
