Softball Splits Doubleheader At Wesley

DOVER, Del. – The Frostburg State softball team split a conference doubleheader with Wesley, dropping the first game 2-1 and winning the second game 1-0, Saturday afternoon.

Junior Renay Aubel got things going for FSU (15-8, 6-4 CAC) in the first game and drove in sophomore Hannah Tavik for the Bobcats' only run in the first inning. It wasn't until the bottom of the fourth that Wesley (21-12, 4-10 CAC) would strike back, after Samantha Mahoski drew a walk with the bases loaded to tie the game at 1-1.

The Wolverines' Nina Marcano drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning after she singled with the bases loaded to bring in Steph Caracozza.
Junior Taylor Blevins paced the Bobcats, going 2-for-3 at the plate, while Aubel and junior Allison Williams both collected a hit. Tavik picked up just her fourth loss of the season in the circle and struck out four in 6.1 innings.

It took the Bobcats until the fifth inning in the second game to get some offense going, but one run was all they needed to get past the Wolverines.

With two outs in the top of the fifth, sophomore Emily Zengel and Tavik each singled and Aubel drew a walk to load the bases. Junior Lauren Capece then drew a walk to send Zengel across the plate for the winning run.

Short and the Bobcat defense then retired the next nine Wesley batters in the following three half-innings to capture the 1-0 win.

Zengel finished 3-for-4 in the second game while Short earned her eighth win of the season after striking out five and allowing just four hits in 7.0 innings.

The Bobcats head to No. 6 Salisbury tomorrow for a 1:00 pm conference doubleheader.
