ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman Allison Short tossed a complete game shutout in game two to help the Frostburg State University softball team split its season-opening series with Randolph-Macon, Sunday.
The Yellow Jackets (1-1) rallied past Frostburg (1-1) for a 3-2 win in game one behind a two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Bobcats answered with a 3-0 shutout win in the nightcap thanks to a stellar collegiate debut from Short. She struckout five batters and scattered four hits for the victory in the circle.
FSU took a 2-0 cushion in the third inning of game one. Sophomore Megan Tracey walked to lead off the inning before scoring on a sophomore Hannah Tavik triple. Tavik crossed the plate on the same play thanks to a throwing error on Randolph-Macon.
RMC plated one run in the bottom of the frame before the two-out home run handed it the win in the seventh inning.
Tavik and junior Allison Williams each finished 1-for-3 at the plate, while Tavik endured the loss in the circle.
In the second game, six different Bobcats registered a hit behind a 3-for-4 effort from junior Taylor Blevins and two hits from junior Lauren Capece.
Frostburg plated two runs in the fourth inning for a 2-0 lead. Capece and Williams singled to open the inning before a single from Short scored Capece for the 1-0 edge. Sophomore Emily Harvey then singled to load the bases before freshman Sam Gatton drew a bases loaded walk that scored Williams.
The Bobcats tacked on their final run in the fifth when Tavik and Blevins posted back-to-back singles before Tavik scored on an error by the RMC outfield.
Frostburg travels to the Roanoke College Bash this weekend when it faces Virginia Wesleyan on Friday at 10:00 am.
