CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The 16th ranked Frostburg State baseball team snapped its two-game skid with a 9-2 victory over Washington College, Thursday afternoon.
The Bobcats (13-2) jumped out to a quick lead with a four-run first inning and never looked back. Senior Zach Weiss opened the scoring with an RBI-single to shortstop to score senior Ricky Castro and an one-out single from senior Ricky Brady brought home just JT Tipton. Weiss came home on a wild pitch to give Frostburg a 3-0 lead. Brady scored the final run of the inning on a single from junior Connor Cooper.
The Bobcats plated a pair of runs in the top of the second to take a six run lead. Sophomore started Jake Stephens carried a no-hitter until the fifth inning when Washington got its first hit of the game, a single to left with one out. Stephens got the next Shoreman to go down swinging before ending the inning with a ground ball to short.
Frostburg added a run in the top of the seventh for a little insurance. Castro led off the frame with a double to left center before coming home on a throwing error by the Washington pitcher on Tipton's sac bunt.
Washington posted its first and only runs of the game in the bottom of the seventh on three hits and a Frostburg balk. Ryan Donnelly doubled down the right field line to bring home Evan Hirschbaum. After a pair of strikeouts from Bobcat reliever junior Logan Hunt, Wes Robertson scored on a balk to cut the FSU lead to 7-2.
FSU scored its final two runs of the game in the top of the ninth with a pair of runs on a hit and a Washington error. After senior Nick Walker stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher, he came home on Brady's single up the middle. Senior Lane Farmer and junior Pat Sines drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Brady scored the game's final run after coming home on a wild pitch to give FSU the 9-2 victory.
Freshman Daniel Richardson came out to pitch the final inning for Frostburg and after getting the first Shoreman to strikeout, gave up a triple to Donnelly. Richardson closed out the game with a pair of strikeouts, leaving the runner stranded at third.
Stephens earned his first win of the season on the mound for Frostburg after 6.0 innings, giving up just two runs on four hits and striking out five. The Bobcat pitchers struck out 12 Shoreman on the day. Castro and Brady finished the game with two hits each while Castro scored three runs and Weiss and Brady drove in two a piece.
#16 Frostburg returns to action on Saturday for a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader against Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00.
