Bobcat Softball Opens Spring Break With Three Wins

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Frostburg State softball team kicked off its spring break spring on Monday with three wins. The Bobcats defeated Eureka, 12-4 in five innings, Kentucky Christian 7-2 and rounded out the day with a 6-5 victory over Spalding.
 
Frostburg (4-1) plated three runs in the second, seven in third and one each in the fourth and fifth innings in the win over the Red Devils. Sophomore Hannah Tavik took the win in the circle after tossing all 5.0 innings with three strikeouts.
 
Junior Allison Williams and freshman Sam Gatton each finished 2-for-4 with two RBI. With two outs in the seven-run third inning, Williams singled home a run, while Gatton doubled home two more. Junior Taylor Blevins capped the inning with a three-run triple.
 
Sophomore Emily Harvey was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI, while Tavik, Blevins, junior Lauren Capece, junior Renay Aubel, sophomore Selina Matulonis and junior Hannah Stronger each had a hit.
 
In the second game of the day, a 7-2 victory over Kentucky Christian, freshman Allison Short earned the win after tossing all 7.0 innings, with four strikeouts and just one earned run.
 
At the plate, Tavik tripled home Blevins in the first inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Aubel. Tavik singled home Gatton in the third, while in the fourth, Capece scored on an RBI ground out from Harvey before a Gatton triple scored Short.
 
Harvey, Tavik and Gatton each finished 2-for-3 to lead the Bobcats in hitting.
 
In the final contest of the afternoon, Frostburg rallied past Spalding after trailing 4-0. Tavik, Short and Aubel all pitched for the Bobcats. Tavik picked up the win, her second of the day, while Short threw 5.1 innings and allowed just three hits.
 
Aubel finished 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, while Tavik was 3-for-4 with two RBI. Both Emily Zengel (sophomore) and Blevins finished 2-for-4.
 
Frostburg scored three runs in the third to start its rally. Blevins, Tavik and Capece all drove in runs during the frame.
 
In the seventh, Blevins singled to lead off the inning before scoring the game-winning run when Tavik and Aubel both smacked back-to-back singles.
 
Frostburg returns to action tomorrow when it faces Guilford at 9:30 am and Keystone at 11:30 am.
