Volleyball Falls In Four Sets At Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Frostburg State volleyball team kept the pressure on Marymount and took the match to four sets before falling to the Saints, 3-1, in Capital Athletic Conference play, Wednesday evening.

Down 11-5 in the first set, Frostburg (10-12, 0-2 CAC) used a 5-1 rally to come back within two, 12-10, before the Saints (14-5, 2-0 CAC) used their own five-point run to put the game out of reach and take the opening set, 25-20.

FSU then roared back to life in game two, despite being down 18-10 midway through the set. The Bobcats bared their claws and came within two, 21-19, to keep the game intact. The Saints had several chances to put the game away as they were up, 24-21, but Frostburg capitalized on six of the match's final seven points to come away with the 27-25 win and knot the match at 1-1.

Game three saw FSU take a two-point lead, 13-11, in the middle of the match, but the Saints ran up a 6-0 rally to take a 17-13 lead. The Bobcats came back within one, 18-17, but Marymount overpowered the visitors with a 7-1 run to close out the set, 25-18.

The fourth set was much the same as Frostburg jumped out to an early 6-3 advantage. The hosts then used a 9-2 comeback to take a four-point lead, 12-8, which they never relinquished. FSU's best chance to take the game came on a 6-2 rally that jumped the 'Cats to just one point back, 19-18, but the Saints scored six of the final seven points to take game four, 25-19, and the match, 3-1.

Sophomore Naya Cheatem finished the day with a game-high 23 kills. Classmates Jessica Bugtong (two service aces) and Madelyn Torres (37 assists) posted four blocks each for the Bobcats. Sophomore Lindsey Scepura added 16 digs.

The Bobcats return to action Saturday, October 10 when they travel to Christopher Newport for an 11:00 am contest. Frostburg will then face Washington & Lee at 1:00 pm.
