FROSTBURG, Md. – Sixth-seeded York (Pa.) defeated third-seeded Frostburg State, 2-0, in a CAC Tournament first round matchup, Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans (7-10) scored one goal in each half en route to the win and they advance to the semifinals and will face second-seeded St. Mary's.
York's Maxine Herman knocked home a loose ball in the 15
th minute to grab a 1-0 lead, while in the second half Caitlin Rankin collected her own saved shot and connect on the rebound for the 2-0 Spartan lead.
One of Frostburg's best chances on the afternoon came in the 72
nd minute when sophomore Kourtney McLain ripped a hard shot from the right side of the 18, but was cleared away from the goal by a Spartan defender.
Bobcat senior keeper Paige Gray made four saves in just over 50 minute of action. She made a diving save inside the final 10 minutes of the opening half to keep the score at 1-0 at intermission and she made another diving save in the opening minutes of the second just prior to York's second goal. Freshman Rhianna Lapen stopped one shot in 39:26.
Kate Lutte earned the win for York after totaling five saves.
Both Frostburg (10-7-3) and York each finished with 10 shots and six corner kicks.
