Women Post Huge Win On Senior Day

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women's soccer team entered Saturday's matchup with Wesley as one of the CAC's highest scoring teams and the Bobcats saved arguably their best overall effort for the matchup with the Wolverines.

On senior day, FSU scored a season-high seven goals and posted its seventh shutout of the season with a 7-0 defeat of Wesley that locked up a first round playoff game for the Bobcats in the CAC Tournament.

More importantly, the victory over Wesley (5-9-2, 2-6 CAC) secured a first round home game next Saturday, Oct. 31, at Bobcat Stadium for Frostburg. A time and opponent will be determined later this week.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 cushion at halftime and added four more goals in the second as they improve to 9-6-3 overall and 5-1-2 in the league. FSU registered 35 shots, one off its season best, and outshot the visitors 35-4. Frostburg also took all 10 corner kicks.

Senior Erin Worthman, Frostburg's leading scorer, led charge up front for the Bobcats. She finished with two goals and one assist and posted a game-high five shots.

While Worthman finished with five points, it was freshman Danielle Ferris that set the tone for the Bobcats early on.

Ferris, who normally starts on defense, moved to the front line and made the most of her opportunity. She scored on a low hard shot in the 30th minute and answered again in the 34th minute when she headed home a cross from Worthman for a 2-0 lead.

Worthman called her own number less than 30 seconds later when she scored off an assist from sophomore Kelsey Folch as the Bobcats led 3-0 at the break.

Senior Chelsie McCoy got things going in the second half when she was taken down inside the 18 and awarded a penalty kick. She buried the attempt into the left side of the net to make it 4-0 at 51:25.

Worthman capped her afternoon with her second score off an assist from junior Jessi Martz in the 54th minute for a 5-0 lead.

Freshman Anais Ventura scored her first collegiate goal in the 75th minute off a pass from sophomore Alyssa Malanik and at 85:31, sophomore Katie Broadhurst scored for the first time this season to make it a 7-0 final.

Senior Paige Gray earned the win in goal for FSU after playing the first half. Freshman Rhianna Lapen and junior Karen Belteton split the second half with Lapen making the only save for Frostburg on the afternoon.

Wesley's Antonia Pote endured the loss despite making seven saves.

Frostburg hosts Southern Virginia this Tuesday at 6:00 pm.
