NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Juniors Jerel Carter and Shawn Henson each scored in double figures, but Frostburg State stumbled to a 92-58 loss at Christopher Newport, Saturday afternoon.
Carter led the Bobcats (8-9, 4-6 CAC) in scoring for the fifth time this season with 13 points, while Henson added 11. Carter also contributed nine rebounds and four steals.
The duo combined for 24 of the team's 58 points as Frostburg shot just 35.8 percent from the field (19-of-53), including 4-of-19 (21.1%) from beyond the arc.
Meanwhile, the Captains (13-4, 8-2 CAC) shot 46.3 percent from the floor (31-of-67) with 11 three-pointers. CNU was led in scoring behind 22 points from Aaron McFarland. Marcus Carter and Kevin Regimbal each added 10.
After a close ballgame in the early going, Christopher Newport slowly pulled away late in the opening half. FSU junior Nick Smoot hit a jumper with 8:08 showing to pull the Bobcats to within one at 17-16. However, CNU inched its way to a 35-24 halftime lead after outscoring the Bobcats 18-8 down the stretch.
Senior Jabari Kamau hit a layup to open the second half as Frostburg narrowed the deficit to nine, 35-26, but CNU quickly collected a 13-0 run to push its lead to 48-26. The hosts pushed their lead to over 30 in the closing minutes.
Frostburg State returns to action on Wednesday when its hosts Mary Washington at 8:00 pm.
