Bobcats Fall to Saint Vincent

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team saw its seven-game winning streak snapped as visiting Saint Vincent defeated the Bobcats 3-0, Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, the Bobcats slip to 8-6 on the season while the Bearcats improve to 9-6 on the year with the win.

SVC jumped out to a quick start in the first set and never relinquished the lead. With junior Aimee Petrides at the service line, the Bobcats battled back to within two points at 23-21 but the Bearcats finished out the set with two straight points to close out the opening set, 25-21.

Senior Morgan Hoover tied the second set at 12-12 with her first service ace of the match before the two teams battled point-for-point for the next eight points until the Bobcats took an 17-15 lead behind two strong serves from Petrides, including her only ace of the match. After giving up the serve, Petrides put FSU up 24-19 with a kill off an assists from freshman Madelyn Torres. The Bearcats clawed their way back, however, and scored the match's final six points to take a 2-0 set lead with a 26-24 victory.

With the third set tied 9-9, Saint Vincent scored three-straight points to take a 12-9 lead and the Bearcats would not give up the lead for the rest of the set. The Bobcats pulled within one at 13-12, but could not find a groove and the Bearcats went on to win the final set, 25-17.

Freshman Naya Cheatem turned in her best performance of the season with 13 kills on the day. Torres handed out a match-best 34 assists on the day while junior Meagan Molly led the team with 15 digs on the day.

The Bobcats return to the court when they travel to the Lebanon Valley Tournament next weekend. FSU opens the tournament with Bridgewater on Friday, Sept. 26 at 8:00 pm.
