FROSTBURG, Md. – The hard-hitting duo of junior Aimee Petrides and freshman Naya Cheatem led the Frostburg State volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over visiting Penn State Altoona, Wednesday evening. The Bobcats took the match by set scores of 25-23, 25-19, 25-21.
Box ScoreWith the win, the Bobcats improve to 8-5 on the season and push their winning streak to seven while the Lions fall to 2-8 on the year.
Trailing 16-9 in the first set, the Bobcats found a groove and battled back from their largest deficit of the match behind strong serving of Petrides and freshman Amanda Snowden. After a service error from the Lions with the score tied at 23-23 to set up the set point, Cheatem recorded her fourth kill of the set to give FSU the win.
In the second set, Frostburg never lost its lead taking a 4-3 advantage after a Lion service error. Petrides led the offense in the second set with four of her 11 kills for the match while Cheatem chipped in three kills without an error.
The Bobcats led for most of the third and final set until the Lions battled back and tied the set at 20-20. Petrides and freshman Madelyn Torres combined for back-to-back points to give the lead back to Frostburg, 22-20 before Petrides finished out the set with two strong serves to put the Lions away.
Cheatem finished the match with 10 kills while hitting .429 over the three sets and Petrides led the team with 11 kills. Torres handed out 26 assists on the evening while junior Tiffany Rohrer led the defense with 15 digs on the day.
The Bobcats return to action when they welcome St. Vincent to Bobcat Arena on Saturday for a 1:00 pm match.
