Women’s Soccer Falls To Catholic

FROSTBURG, Md. – Catholic scored one goal in each half and capitalized on its limited opportunities to earn a slim 2-1 win over Frostburg State, Saturday.

The Bobcats (4-1-1) outshot Catholic, 16-8, but suffered their first loss of the season, despite several key scoring opportunities in each half.
 
The Cardinals (5-0-1) got on the board in the 10th minute as Andrea Jablonskyj corralled a loose ball just inside the 18-yard box and slipped a rolling shot into an empty net for a 1-0 cushion.
 
Frostburg had several chances starting at 32:15 when freshman Jaci Buteau had a shot turned away by Cardinal keeper Lexi Halperin. Fifteen seconds later, senior Stephanie Fazenbaker's shot was cleared off the back line by defender Maddy Thompson. Rounding out the flurry was another save by Halperin, this time on freshman Alyssa Malanik's shot at 34:53.
 
Ten minutes into second half action, Catholic scored again for a 2-0 lead when Lindsay Aleman turned and fired a shot into the upper right corner of the net.
 
Moments later, FSU attempted to answer with three-straight shots, but couldn't connect until 83:13 when freshman Melanie Bell hit a hard driving shot from outside the 18 into the upper right corner of the net past a diving Halperin as Frostburg narrowed the deficit to 2-1.
 
Bell attempted another shot at 84:50 that sailed high of the net and Fazenbaker had a header at 87:52 cleared away by midfielder Alyssa Fiore to give Catholic the win.
 
Bobcat keeper Katie Smith made three saves while suffering the loss. Halperin finished with seven saves in the victory.
 
Frostburg travels to Penn State Altoona on Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
