Bobcats Swept by No. 14 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Fourteenth ranked Christopher Newport overpowered Frostburg State in a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader, Saturday. The Bobcats dropped both contests, suffering a slim 2-1 loss in game one and a 9-1 setback in the final game of the afternoon.

The Bobcats (10-7, 4-2 CAC) and Captains (26-6,7-1 CAC) were scoreless through the first four innings in the first game until the hosts plated one run in the bottom of the fifth.

Frostburg answered back in the top of the seventh as sophomore Lauren Capece posted a double down the left field line for a RBI to knot the game at 1-1. Capece finished the day with two hits in addition to her RBI.

The Captains ended the game in the bottom of the seventh; capitalizing on a Bobcat error to tack on just one more run to squeak by with the 2-1 win.

Freshman Hannah Tavik suffered her fourth loss of the season despite allowing just one earned run while striking out four.

In the second contest, both teams posted a run in the first. CNU produced five hits to bring home two runs, and used just four hits to bring four more Captains across the plate in the fourth frame.

CNU found just one more run in the fifth and sixth innings to close out the contest with the 9-1 victory.

Senior Caitlin Lovend and junior Bailey Ellsworth both contributed three hits each while sophomore Renay Aubel and freshman Megan Tracey donated one apiece.

Sophomore Mary Ann Moore endured just her third loss of the season after allowing three earned runs on 12 hits.

The Bobcats return home this Tuesday (Apr. 8) to host No. 2 ranked Salisbury at 2:00 pm.
