Softball Splits Home Opening DH With Stevenson

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State held on to defeat Stevenson in game two to earn a split with the visiting Mustangs, Tuesday. In its home-opening doubleheader, the Bobcats fell in game one 4-2, but held off a late scare from Stevenson to earn a 3-2 victory in the second.

In game two, sophomore Mary Ann Moore tossed all 7.0 innings and allowed just two earned runs on four hits for her first win of the spring. Stevenson threatened with a single run in the top of the seventh, but Moore got the final two batters to fly out to end the game.

Junior Bailey Ellsworth led Frostburg (6-5) with two hits in the second contest. She singled for FSU in the first inning and later scored on a double to center from sophomore Renay Aubel.

Sophomore Taylor Blevins led off the two-run Frostburg fifth inning with an infield single. Three batters later, junior Savanah Hose singled to right field and scored Blevins as Frostburg took a 2-1 lead. Senior Caitlin Lovend later scored freshman Emily Zengel on a ground out to second base.

The Mustangs (10-7) scored a solo run in the first inning, but threatened when their first two batters reached in the seventh. Laura Welch hit a sacrifice fly to left field that scored Abbey DeFeo, but Moore recorded the final two outs to save the win.

In the opener, Frostburg carried a 2-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning before Stevenson scored four runs for the win.

Hose drew a walk early in the third inning, advanced to second when Lovend was hit by a pitch and ended up at third when Ellsworth produced an infield single. Freshman Hannah Tavik smacked a single up the middle that scored Hose for the game's first run.

Two innings later, Hose singled through the right side to start the Bobcat offense in the fifth. She advanced to second on an error and ended up at third on another infield single from Ellsworth. Tavik singled again, this time to left, that plated Hose as FSU led 2-0.

In the top of the seventh, Laura Welch singled to left to lead off the inning and set the tone for Stevenson. Abbey DeFeo doubled home two runs during the four-run outburst that captured the win for the visitors.

Hose finished 1-for-1 with two runs, while Tavik was 2-for-4 with two RBI. However, Tavik suffered the loss in the circle after allowing all four runs in the seventh. She tossed all 7.0 innings and struckout six.

FSU returns to action tomorrow when it hosts Wesley in CAC action at 3:00 pm.
