St. Mary’s Pulls Away From Frostburg

FROSTBURG, Md. – Three starters scored in double figures as St. Mary's (Md.) pulled away from Frostburg State for a 72-54 win in CAC action, Saturday afternoon.

The Seahawks (15-6, 9-4) led after each half of play, but the host Bobcats (2-19, 1-12) were able to keep their deficit within five late in the first half. Following a three-pointer at the buzzer that gave SMCM a 32-24 lead at the break, sophomore Nick Smoot hit the opening bucket of the second half as the Bobcats trailed by just six, 32-26.

The Seahawks then collected a 17-4 scoring outburst and grabbed a 19-point cushion, 49-30, inside the first four minutes of the second stanza.

St. Mary's increased its lead to a game-high 25 inside the final five minutes, but Frostburg scored the game's final seven points to bring the final count to 54-72.

Frostburg kept things close in the first half and trailed by just four points late in the period behind solid efforts from senior Robert Williams and sophomore Kurt Gangler. The duo combined for 14 of the Bobcats' 24 first-half points.

Williams finished the ballgame with a career-high 14 points and five rebounds. Gangler added nine points with four assists, while sophomore Nick Smoot also contributed nine points.

Donn Hall led St. Mary's in both points (16) and rebounds (8). Nick LaGuerre finished with 15 points behind three 3-PT's.

The Bobcats return to action next Wednesday when they travel to Southern Virginia at 8:00 pm.
