FROSTBURG, Md. – Just days after winning a thriller in overtime, the Frostburg State field hockey team ended up on the other end of an extra frame contest as the Bobcats endured a tough 2-1 loss to Virginia Wesleyan, Sunday afternoon.

On Thursday, FSU (2-3) used a penalty shot to slip past Shenandoah 4-3 in double overtime. However, Sunday's game provided a different result for Frostburg as Virginia Wesleyan's Nikki Cuthbert found the back of the cage with 56 seconds left in overtime to keep the Marlins (3-0) undefeated on the season.
The Bobcats appeared to have all the momentum in the extra session, attempting the first four shots, including a penalty shot in the 78th minute.
Marlin keeper Lindsay Baker knocked away the penalty shot, made another save early in overtime and Jillian Gorman posted a defensive save at 71:40 as Virginia Wesleyan hung tough until Cuthbert's game winner.
Senior Amanda Lennon put the Bobcats on the board early in the first half. She collected a pass from sophomore Alexandra Darrow and knocked a shot past Baker as FSU lead 1-0 in the early going.
The game remained in favor of the host Bobcats until 4:40 had ticked off the second half clock. Cuthbert found Taylor Lober for the equalizer to knot things at 1-1. Lober was credited with an assist on Cuthbert's game-winner.
Both teams had several chances late in the second half to break open the tie, but the goalkeepers for both sides made several crucial saves to send the contest in overtime.
FSU sophomore Megan Grimm stopped nine shots, including five in the opening stanza. Baker finished with 13 saves, including seven in the second half and three in overtime.
Frostburg State returns to action this Tuesday when it hosts Wilson at 7:00 pm.
