Softball Ties Single-Season Wins Record With Victory Over Catholic

FROSTBURG, Md. – Frostburg State picked up win number 30 on the season and tied a school record in the process with a 9-3 victory over Catholic in the ECAC South Regional South Tournament First Round, Thursday.

Box Score

The Bobcats improved their record to 30-12 on the season and tied the 2010 squad for the most wins in a season. This year’s club will have a chance to set the record on Saturday in the double elimination portion of the ECAC Tournament. FSU will take on sixth-seeded Stevenson (23-21) on Saturday at Alvernia University (35-9). The opening pitch is scheduled for noon.

Meanwhile, Catholic was eliminated from the tournament and ends its season with a 20-21 overall mark.

Frostburg plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back on its way to its second win in three meetings with the Cardinals this season. FSU pounded out 12 hits and capitalized on five CUA errors for the win.

Freshman pitcher Mary Ann Moore notched her 17th victory of the season, scattering 10 hits and allowing just three earned runs.

Catholic stranded nine base runners and Moore was a big reason why. She maneuvered out of a two-on, no-out jam in the first inning with three consecutive fly balls. In the fourth, CUA posted back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, but Moore struckout Erin Lockwood and used a pair of ground outs to get out of the inning.

In the fifth, the Cardinals again put two runners on base with singles. With one out, Rose Shaver singled up the middle, but Frostburg centerfielder Taylor Vandegrift threw out Mel Galella at third and Vandegrift caught a fly ball from the very next batter to end the frame.

Moore allowed a single run in the third and two runs in the sixth.

A freshmen foursome was responsible for all three FSU runs in the second inning. Taylor Blevins tripled home Renay Aubel and Lauren Capece, while Moore helped her own cause with a single to left that scored Blevins for a 3-0 cushion.

With two outs in the third inning, Frostburg added two runs to its total when senior Shari Beavers hit a towering two-run home run over the left field fence. In the fourth, FSU added to its lead with two more runs. Vandegrift and sophomore Bailey Ellsworth both scored on an error by the Cardinal infield for a 7-1 advantage.

Catholic put two runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning when Amy Laughner doubled home two runners that cut the deficit to 7-3.

However, Frostburg answered with two of its own in the bottom of the sixth for the 9-3 final score.

Beavers finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, while Blevins was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run. Aubel finished with two runs and an RBI while Ellsworth scored twice.
