Softball Rolls To Pair Of Wins at Salisbury Invitational

SALISBURY, Md. – The Frostburg State softball team rebounded in a big way on the second day of the Salisbury University Invitational with wins over Baruch, 20-0, and Washington & Jefferson, 10-4, Saturday.

After getting swept on the first day of the invitational, FSU pounded out 29 hits and scored 30 runs in two games to push its overall record to 5-3.

In the first game, Frostburg State carried a 7-0 lead into the seventh inning and exploded for 13 runs in the final frame for the victory. The Bobcats scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings for a 4-0 cushion and added three in the sixth.

Junior Emily Tempestilli finished 1-for-1 with two runs and made the most of her opportunity. She pinch hit in the seventh and drew a walk in her first at bat. However, on her second trip to the plate, she smacked a grand slam to highlight the Bobcats’ 13-run seventh inning.

Sophomore Bailey Ellsworth led the team with four hits (4-for-6) with three runs scored. Senior Megan Butzner was a perfect 3-for-3 with two doubles, one run and two RBIs. Freshman Renay Aubel had a two-run home run and drove in four runs while senior Kerri O’Malley was 3-for-5 with three runs.

Freshman Mary Ann Moore pitched all 7.0 innings, struckout nine and limited Baruch to just one hit.

In the second and final game, FSU scored three runs for a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth that broke a 3-3 tie. The Presidents scored a solo run in the top of the fifth, but Frostburg sealed the win with four more runs in bottom of the frame for a 10-4 lead.

Senior starting pitcher Shari Beavers helped her own cause with a three-run home run  in the bottom of the fourth that gave the Bobcats a 6-3 lead. In the fifth, senior Taylor Vandegrift singled home a run and later scored on an error and Aubel singled home two more runs as FSU pulled away for the win.

Beavers tossed a complete game and scattered seven hits and allowed just two earned runs for her third win of the season.

Beavers and Aubel each drove in three runs. Aubel finished 1-for-2 with a run scored, while Beavers was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Ellsworth was 3-for-4 and scored twice.

FSU travels to Penn State Altoona on Wednesday for a double header starting at 3:00 pm.
