Softball Splits CAC Doubleheader with Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Frostburg State softball team used two solo homeruns to earn a 2-0 shutout victory over Mary Washington in the opener of Capital Athletic Conference action, Saturday. The Bobcats lost the second game 6-4.

The Bobcats (13-4, 1-1 CAC) and the Eagles (9-14, 1-1 CAC) remained scoreless for the first three innings. FSU only registered one hit on a single from senior Taylor Vandegrift.

In the top of the fourth, freshman Renay Aubel led the inning off with a solo home run to put the Bobcats on the board with the 1-0 advantage. Aubel is at the top of the Capital Athletic Conference leaderboard in home runs with seven and RBI with 28.

The Eagles tried to rebound in the bottom of the inning, and connected with two singles but couldn’t bring them home.

In the top of the seventh, freshman Lauren Capece also plated a solo home run for her fifth on the year which finalized the game at 2-0.

Freshman Mary Ann Moore earned her seventh win of the year, allowing just two hits in seven innings of work.

The Eagles bounced back quickly as they plated two runs in the bottom of the first to open the second game. Mary Washington also used a three-run third inning to hold the 3-0 advantage over the vistors.

The Bobcats got on the board in the fifth inning as junior Caitlin Lovend laced a single to right field to bring home Vandegrift and freshman Taylor Blevins, 5-2.

FSU plated runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings but the gap proved to be too much as the Eagles took home the 6-4 win.

Senior Kerri O’Malley knocked a double to center to record a run in the sixth inning but UMW countered with a solo home run from Williams to hold a 6-3 advantage.

Senior Shari Beavers brought the deficit closer with a single to left which brought sophomore Bailey Ellsworth home, but that’s as close as FSU would get as they
closed out the seventh inning.

Beavers finished 3-for-4 in the second contest and suffered the loss in the circle allowing seven hits in six innings.

FSU takes a break from CAC action as they host Catholic for a doubleheader on Thursday, April 4th. The first game is set to start at 3:00 pm followed by a 5:00 pm contest.
