Softball Splits With Dickinson

CARLISLE, Pa. – The Frostburg State softball team split a doubleheader with Dickinson after winning ten games straight, coming off a 7-0 record at the Fastpitch Dreams Classic during spring break. The Bobcats took the first game 10-7, but dropped the second contest 12-8.

The Bobcats (13-4) held Dickinson scoreless for the first three innings during the first game. FSU scored two runs in the first due to a Caitlin Lovend home run to put the Bobcats up 2-0. Lovend and teammate Renay Aubel, who also found a long ball during this series, currently lead the Capital Athletic Conference with six home runs a piece.

FSU tacked one on the board in the second inning and exploded in the third with seven runs to hold a 10-0 advantage over the Devils. Senior Kerri O’Malley and sophomore Bailey Ellsworth both contributed a single to each bring home two RBI.

The Bobcats failed to score for the rest of the game, but it wasn’t needed as the Devils only put up seven runs, including four in the sixth inning for a 10-7 final.

Senior Taylor Vandegrift went 2-for-2 with two runs and a walk. Freshman Mary Ann Moore improved to a 9-4 record with a win in the circle, allowing seven hits with two strikeouts.

The second game didn’t go as well for FSU despite opening the contest with a five-run first inning. Aubel slammed a home run to bring Lovend and Ellsworth across the plate, who both contributed singles. Shari Beavers, Moore, O’Malley and Vandegrift also registered singles in the first.

The Devils put up two runs in the first and four in the second due to a Casey Ditzler triple to put the game at 7-6, in favor of the visitors.

Although the Bobcats put up a run in the third, much like in the first game, they remained scoreless from the fourth inning on. Dickinson tacked on six more runs for the 12-8 victory.

Lovend went three-for-four from the plate, while Aubel totaled three RBI. Beavers suffered her second loss on the year in 3.2 innings; from the plate she went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI.

The Bobcats enter CAC action this weekend, March 30, with a doubleheader at Mary Washington. The first game is set to begin at 12:30 pm followed by a 2:30 pm contest.
