NEW YORK, N.Y. – After falling behind 2-0, the Frostburg State University volleyball team rallied for a hard fought 3-2 victory over Susquehanna University on the first night of the NYU Tournament, Friday evening.
Box Score
The Bobcats (1-14) dropped the first two sets of the match 25-16 and 25-14 before winning the final three. Susquehanna (5-11) didn’t make it easy as Frostburg had to rally in all three of the final games for the win.
In the third game, Susquehanna appeared to have control of the game and the match after breaking an 11-11 tie with an 8-1 run for a 19-12 lead. However, the Bobcats countered with 6-0 scoring surge that brought the deficit to just 19-18. After knotting the score at 20 and again at 24, a ball handling error on the Crusaders and a service ace from freshman Aimee Petrides handed the Bobcats the win.
In the fourth, the Bobcats trailed for much of the set, including a 19-14 deficit late in the game. FSU collected a 5-0 run that tied the match at 19-19. Neither squad could pull away as the match was later tied at 20, 21 and 23. Another service ace from Petrides and a pair of kills from sophomore Andrea Armstrong helped the Bobcats squeak out a close 25-23 win.
In the fifth and decisive set, the Bobcats trailed by four (6-2) and later by three (12-9) before rallying for the victory. FSU scored four consecutive points to rally from a 12-9 hole for a 13-12 lead following a Susquehanna timeout. Armstrong once again stepped up late with two more kills and a sophomore Jamie Frank service ace handed the Bobcats the match’s final point and a 16-14 win.
Armstrong finished with a double-double 15 kills and 14 blocks. She also tossed in three blocks and two aces. Sophomore Maddie White and Morgan Hoover each added eight kills while White contributed 13 digs and four aces. Frank finished with a team-high 20 digs while sophomore Kass Greis handed out 29 assists.
The Bobcats return to the court tomorrow morning at 10:00 am when they face Haverford.
