Softball Clinches Third Place in CAC

FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State softball team had a chance to move into second place for the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament next week with a sweep of Mary Washington, and the Bobcats had the necessary pitching performance from senior Lauren Scrivener in game one. The Bobcat bats were silenced, however, as Mary Washington clinched second place with a 2-0 victory. The Bobcats sealed third place with a 13-4 victory in five innings in game two.

Scrivener carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning on Senior Day, but the Eagles rallied for single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Frostburg (18-14, 8-4) threatened in its half of the fifth after putting two on after two outs, but Hannah Otterman got junior center fielder Taylor Vandegrift to ground out to first base.

Otterman pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just four hits while notching six strikeouts and 12 groundball outs.

The bats awoke in the second game as the Bobcats posted runs in each of the five innings, using the long ball to propel the offense to 13 runs. Freshman Amanda Hennessee tied the game at four in the bottom of the third with a two-run shot to score Caitlin Lovend. In the fourth, another senior made a splash in her final regular season home game. Right fielder Jenna Delaney hit a three-run homer to put the Bobcats ahead, 7-4, with a lead they would not relinquish. Frostburg made it 8-4 later in the inning on an RBI single by junior catcher Megan Butzner.

In the fifth, the Bobcats used three walks and a single to make the score 9-4. Junior shortstop Shari Beavers then hit a grand slam to center to end the contest with the mercy rule, 13-4.

Hennessee, Lovend, and Butzner each had three hits, while Hennessee and Beavers each had four RBIs. Another senior, Jordan Wright, earned her 12th victory of the season.

With the result, Frostburg will host York (Pa.) in the first round of the double-elimination CAC Tournament on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
