VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Sophomore first baseman Caitlin Lovend and junior pitcher Shari Beavers hit back-to-back home runs and junior Megan Foy had three hits as the Frostburg State softball team defeated previously unbeaten Randolph, 8-5, at the Beach Blast on Friday. Frostburg then fell to Roanoke, 10-2, later in the afternoon.
The Bobcats (1-3) made Randolph pay for two errors by scoring five unearned runs in the third and fourth innings.
They scored two in the bottom of the third after an error allowed junior Taylor Vandegrift to reach. After two outs, a Foy single scored freshman Bailey Ellsworth, and a wild pitch plated Beavers. Ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth, another error opened the door. With one out and sophomore Emilee Ray on, junior Kerri O'Malley reached on a miscue by the catcher on a bunt attempt.
Ellsworth walked to load the bases, and Lovend brought them all around with a double to center to make it 5-1.
With the score the same in the bottom of the sixth, Lovend hit a two-run shot, her third of the season, to push the lead to 7-1. Beavers came up next and homered to left to add some insurance and to help her own cause.
Randolph (6-1) scored four runs in the top of the seventh, but the deficit was too deep. Lovend finished with five RBIs. Ray was 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Beavers struck out seven in seven innings to earn the win.
Lovend added two more hits and another RBI in the loss to Roanoke. Her single in the third scored Vandegrift to give Frostburg an early 1-0 lead. But Roanoke would stack four runs in the fourth on top of two in the third to build a 6-1 lead by the time Vandegrift scored again on a Beavers single to left field in the top of the fifth.
Roanoke (5-3) matched the run in the bottom half and added three more in the sixth to invoke the mercy rule.
Frostburg is scheduled to play Lynchburg at 10:00 a.m. and Averett at noon on the second day of the Beach Blast.
