FROSTBURG, Md. - A contest between rivals always adds a little extra intensity on both sides and Saturday's showdown between Frostburg State and Salisbury was no different.
A wild second half was capped by a pair of game-winning shots in the waning seconds of regulation and Frostburg survived a Salisbury rally and one overtime to escape with a 77-74 win on senior day at Bobcat Arena.
FSU (12-11, 9-5) never trailed in the first half and built a 13-point lead early in the second half. The Bobcats led by 10 points, 54-44, with 8:17 to play before Salisbury (12-11, 5-9) slowly rallied over the remainder of the half. SU's Mike Maczko hit back-to-back baskets late in the period to tie the game at 60-60 with 51 seconds showing.
After an FSU turnover with 32 seconds left, Salisbury's Devin Posey hit what appeared to be the game-winning jumper with six seconds left that handed the visitors their only lead of the game, 62-60.
However, senior Bradley Nunn drove the length of the floor and hit a tough layup as time expired to knot the contest at 62 and send it to overtime.
In the extra frame, the Bobcats outscored SU 15-12 and led by as many as eight points, 77-69, with 22 seconds left.
Senior Maurice Williams poured in his fifth double-double of the season behind game-high's in points (24) and rebounds (14). He was a near perfect 15-of-16 from the foul line. Nunn scored 11 points and handed out a career-high eight assists, while senior Troy Dockett scored 19 points and junior DeSean Antoine added 15.
Frostburg State led by five at halftime, 32-27, thanks to 54.2 percent shooting (13-of-24) in the opening half. Dockett scored 11 in the first stanza and made two of the team's four three-pointers.
Posey stole the show in the second half for Salisbury as he scored 14 points in the period after being held scoreless in the first. Nunn contributed seven points, none bigger than the final two, and the Sea Gulls shot 55.6 percent in the second half to help key the late rally.
Posey and Chris Viqueira each finished with 17 points to lead the Sea Gulls. Maczko added a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday when they host Marymount in their final home game of the regular season. Tipoff is set for 8:00 pm.
