Women's Basketball Loses in Final Seconds at Hood, 60-59

FREDERICK, Md. - The Frostburg State women's basketball team lost at Hood, 60-59, in a game that saw 11 ties and eight lead changes. The last of those eight lead changes came in the game's waning seconds to push the Blazers to the Capital Athletic Conference victory Wednesday evening.

The Bobcats (5-16, 3-9) had taken the lead on two separate occasions in the final minutes on made baskets by sophomore guard Elaina Hummel. Her three-pointer with 4:18 to play gave the Bobcats a 55-54 lead, and her layup at 1:48 broke the 11th tie to put Frostburg up, 59-57. Hummel finished the game with 11 points and three rebounds. The Bobcats, however, did not score again and fell victim to three of their 15 turnovers in the final 1:34.

The second of the turnovers led to Hood's Dyanna Prater making the second of two free throws to narrow the margin to 59-58 with 49 seconds to play. On the ensuing possession, Frostburg again turned the ball over with 22 seconds left, still clinging to that one point lead. After a Hood timeout, the Blazers' Emily Maerz missed a three-pointer but Heather Boyce grabbed the offensive rebound and scored to give Hood the lead, 60-59. Frostburg did not manage to get off a final shot and fell for the sixth-straight game.

Neither team had much breathing room as Frostburg led by no more than four while Hood's biggest margin was six. The Bobcats shot 43.9 percent from the field but were only 1-for-7 from behind the arc, while Hood shot 35.7 percent and were 5-of-15 from three. Hood also outshot the Bobcats from the line. The Blazers shot 71.4 percent (15-of-21) to the Bobcats' 53.3 percent (8-of-15).

Junior guard Stephanie Straka had a game-high 18 points, a career-high nine rebounds and five assists. Freshman guard Simone Wise tied a career-high with her 13 points.

The Bobcats travel to Wesley on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
