ST. MARY’S CITY, Md. – Junior Amanda Lennon scored the lone goal for Frostburg State and St. Mary’s found the net twice in each half to overpower the visiting Bobcats, Saturday afternoon.
St. Mary’s (6-4, 1-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening half of play and kept Frostburg (5-10, 0-3) from making a run. The Seahawks held a 13-4 lead in shots in the first and scored on their first attempt of the game.
Claire Kortyna found the net for the game’s first goal off a penalty corner just 6:09 into play. Olivia Edwards took the penalty corner and found Ally Dahlen who slipped a pass to Kortyna for the double assist.
St. Mary’s continued to pressure the Bobcat defense and senior keeper Maggie Edwards with 10 more shots until the 11th found the net. Bobcat junior Tori Suess recorded her second defensive save of the opening half when she turned away a shot from Lauriann Parker.
However, the rebounded ball was collected by Gabby Collins (30:29) who scored the second goal of the first half for St. Mary’s.
Edwards finished the first period with seven saves while Suess added two defensive saves to help keep the deficit at 2-0.
The Bobcats came out firing in the second half taking the first four shots. Senior Alli Elliott smacked a ball on net just 1:30 into the second that was saved by St. Mary’s keeper Christy Bishop.
Thirty-one seconds later, the Bobcats drew a penalty corner for their second opportunity of the half. Freshman Ashley Johnson hit the ball in from the end line and junior Becky Randel took a shot that was again turned away from the cage. FSU attempted two more shots over the next several minutes but both sailed wide of the net.
The Seahawks found the net for their third goal of the game at 47:35 when Rachel Natoli scored her first of the season.
Frostburg capitalized on its next penalty corner for its first score of the contest that narrowed the gap to 3-1 (57:37). Johnson again took the penalty corner on the end line and the ball ended up on the stick of Lennon who found the net for her first goal of the season.
The hosts quickly answered to push their lead back to three at 4-1. SMC was awarded a penalty corner and Parker found Edwards for a goal with just over 11 minutes remaining in the contest.
St. Mary’s finished the game with a 22-10 lead in shots and a slim 7-5 edge in penalty corners.
Edwards made 11 saves in the loss, her seventh game with 10 or more saves this season. Senior Heather Gray also added a defensive save in the second half.
The Bobcats return to the field on Tuesday when they host Eastern Mennonite at 5:00 pm.
