FSU Field Hockey Loses to Salisbury in Regular Season Finale

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State University field hockey team suffered a 12-0 loss in its regular season finale to No. 2 ranked Salisbury, Sunday.

The Sea Gulls (13-1, 4-1) scored four goals in the opening half of play, but exploded in the second with eight goals for their second victory since suffering their first loss of the season last weekend.

Nine different players scored for SU, led by two goals and two assists from Erica Henderson and three goals from Mallory Elliot. Stacy Lamboni added one goal and three assists.

Following the 4-0 halftime cushion, Elliott scored three of the game’s next four goals over the next eight minutes for an 8-0 SU lead.

The Frostburg (7-13, 0-5) attack had several chances to cut into the deficit late in the opening stanza. FSU attempted four-consecutive shots over a two minute span when Amanda Lennon had a shot blocked by the Salisbury defense at starting at 29:28. Following a Bobcat penalty corner, the first of the contest for the hosts, senior Rachel Merritt had a pair of shots saved by SU keeper Rachel Clewer. Freshman Jackie Best attempted the final shot of the first half for FSU at 31:39.

Just under eight minutes into the second half, Merritt attempted her third and final shot of the afternoon, but the ball was again turned away by Clewer.

The Frostburg attack posted several chances late in the second period. Senior Alli Elliott posted back-to-back shots starting at 64:52. Lennon had an attempt blocked at 66:46 while freshman Amber McCabe sent a shot wide of the net at 67:07.

Salisbury capped the game’s scoring moments later when Leigh Willing scored with just under a minute to play.

The Sea Gulls finished with a 51-10 advantage in shots and held a 14-6 edge in penalty corners.

Bobcat keeper Maggie Edwards stopped a season-high 26 shots in the loss.
