FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women’s soccer team scored twice in the second half and held off an eager York (Pa.) team for a 2-1 victory in a key Capital Athletic Conference match, Wednesday night.
Box Score
The Bobcats, who started the game in fourth place, pushed their overall record to 11-3-1, but more importantly 3-1-1 in the CAC. The win gave the Bobcats 10 points in the league standings just one point behind Mary Washington for second (11-1-2, 3-1-2 CAC). UMW has completed CAC action, while FSU plays Marymount on Friday night at 7:00 pm. If the Bobcats earn a win and three points, they move into second place and will earn a first round bye in the upcoming CAC Tournament.
The contest also marked the final home game for Frostburg State in the regular season. FSU, which has back-to-back road contests before the CAC Tournament, finished with a regular season home record of 7-1-0.
Despite the scoreless first half, the Bobcats provided themselves plenty of opportunities as they held an 11-2 edge in shots. The Bobcats opened the contest with the first six shots. Following two shots from York (7-2-5, 2-1-2 CAC), FSU capped the first half with five more shots, but failed to find the net.
In the second stanza, the Bobcats opened action with the first three shots before connecting on their fourth attempt. Sophomore Stephanie Fazenbaker dribbled the ball into the 18 from the left side of the field. Spartan keeper Melanie Glessner made a diving play to take the ball away from Fazenbaker, but the ball popped towards the middle of the field before junior Country Mack found the back of the net for the game’s first tally (53:45).
Just over seven minutes later, the Bobcats added some insurance to their lead. Junior Adria Graham dropped a pass back to freshman Brooke Longo who connected on a hard left footed shot from roughly 25 yards out that sailed over Glessner and into the net (61:09). The goal is the first of the season and collegiate career for Longo.
The Spartans didn’t back down, despite the deficit and quickly fading game clock. At 74:55, Jena Arnster hit a bouncing ball in front of the Bobcat net that was poked home by Megan Arther as York cut the deficit to 2-1.
Frostburg withstood the late flurry from York and attempted to add to their slim one goal lead. FSU attempted three shots following the goal, but Glessner made a pair of saves to keep the score at 2-1 at the final horn.
Frostburg finished with a 23-4 lead in shots, including a 12-2 edge in the decisive second half. Bobcat keeper Katie Smith stopped two shots for the victory, while Glessner finished with 10 saves in the loss.
The Frostburg/Marymount match this Friday will be played at Long Bridge Park in Arlington, Va. at 7:00 pm.
