Stevenson Squeaks by Women’s Basketball

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State women’s basketball team hung tough with the visiting Stevenson Mustangs, but were unable to get over the hump in the second half as they fell 69-62 at Bobcat Arena.

Box Score

Stevenson (5-15, 3-8) led by as many as 10 points in the second half, but the Bobcats closed the gap to two, 57-55, on a layup by Elizabeth Erickson.  A jumper with 2:52 left by Daniela Poss pushed the lead back to four, before Frostburg’s Elaina Hummel answered with a free throw  to make the score 61-58 with 2:16 left to play.  Stevenson took the ball out of bounds with one second remaining on the shot clock after Erickson swatted a Kayla Kelly layup, but Amanda Craig found Abby DeFeo for a layup as the clock expired to make the score 63-58.

Frostburg (7-12, 3-8) came up empty on its next possession, but Simone Wise picked off a DeFeo pass for a breakaway layup to cut the lead to 63-60 with 1:02 on the clock.  Kayleigh Guzek knocked down two free throws on Stevenson’s next possession before Wise made it a one possession game again, 65-62 with 44 seconds remaining.  The Bobcats had a chance to tie the game after Guzek missed the front end of a one-and-one, but turned the ball over with 25 seconds remaining.  Stevenson went a perfect 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch to put the game out of reach.

The Bobcats took an early 3-0 lead on the game’s second possession on a three-pointer by Hummel, but that would be the only lead they had for the game. Stevenson rattled off seven straight points and controlled the contest the rest of the way.  A jumper by Rayshell Parker as time expired gave the visitors a 37-31 halftime lead.

Frostburg scored the first four points in the second half on baskets by Stephanie Straka and Brynn Arnone, but Stevenson answered right back with 8-2 run to make the score 47-37 with 15:34 remaining.

Wise led the Bobcat comeback in the second half as she scored all nine of her points. Erickson led the Bobcats with 15 points and eight rebounds.  Straka filled the box score with 13 points, five rebounds, and four assists.

Craig led the Mustangs with 20 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and 3-for-3 from downtown.  Craig also was 7-for-7 from the charity stripe.  Sam Murray chipped in 16 points and led the team with seven boards.

The Bobcats continue Capital Athletic Conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Hood at 6 p.m.
