FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State University volleyball team opened the 2011 campaign with four losses at the Haverford Tournament over the weekend.
The Bobcats (0-4) opened action on Saturday with a pair of tough matches against Stevens Tech and Cal Lutheran. Like FSU, both opponents earned a trip to their respective NCAA Regional Championship games last fall. Frostburg eventually lost to Stevens Tech, 3-1, and fell to Cal Lutheran, 3-0.
Senior Sabrina Winterling led the Bobcats offensively in the two opening matches with a total of 17 kills. Freshman Nicole Absher added 15 kills in the two matches, including 12 in her collegiate debut against Stevens Tech. Senior Kylie Carrington handed out 55 assists. As a team, FSU hit .294 against Stevens and had 11 blocks.
On the second day of the tournament, the Bobcats fell to both Bluffton, 3-1, and Bethany (W.Va.), 3-0.
Absher finished with 16 kills over the two matches followed by freshman Andre Armstrong with 13. Carrington registered 52 assists and 19 digs.
The Bobcats travel to the Catholic Univ. Tournament this coming weekend and open on Friday with Bridgewater at 3:00 pm.
