MADISON, N.J. – Frostburg State field hockey junior Maggie Edwards entered the 2011 season ranked 12th in the NCAA in saves among active goalkeepers. Saturday afternoon's contest at Drew University did nothing to hurt her standing. While the Bobcats fell, 4-1, Edwards did plenty to keep the team in the game. She finished with a career-high 33 saves.
Box Score
Drew (1-1) had 27 shots in the first half, but only two found the back of the net. Mary Esposito scored on a pass from Melissa Boyd at 10:51 to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Erin Maguire doubled the margin at 23:57 on a putback off a rebound. The damge could have been worse, but 24 first half saves kept the Bobcats in the game.
The situation still wasn't dire when Sami Calabrese made it 3-0 at 46:10, because the Bobcats (1-1) managed to answer with a goal from freshman Emily Watkins at 53:53. It was Watkins' first career goal. Drew ended Frostburg State's hopes of a comeback when Megan Howlett completed the scoring at 65:12 to put the game out of reach.
Edwards previous high in saves for a game was 30, attained last year in a loss at Christopher Newport.
The Bobcats will play in the Drew Fall Fest consolation match tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.
