FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State field hockey team lost its Capital Athletic Conference opener on the road at Stevenson University, 6-0, Wednesday afternoon.

Stevenson junior Kaitlyn May got the scoring going for the Mustangs as she notched her first goal of the season in the 8th minute. Later in the first half, Ariella Hopp added to the Mustang lead as she found the back of the net after taking a penalty corner. Hopp would assist on the next goal for Stevenson as Leigh Willing would stretch the lead to 3-0.
Frostburg made a push to get on the scoreboard just before the end of the first half. Becky Randel and Chelsea Smith both had good looks at the net, but were denied by Mustang goalie Kelsi Zimmerman.
The second half would bring more of the same as Stevenson’s Ashley Beam notched a hat trick in the period to bring the final scoring to 6-0 in favor of the hosts.
Junior goalkeeper Maggie Edwards, who coming in today’s game, was third among active NCAA Division III field hockey goalkeepers in saves, made 16 stops in the contest to move in to second place. One of Edwards’ saves also included stopping a penalty stroke in the first half.
Frostburg’s Chelsea Smith led the team in shots with four, but the Bobcats were outshot by Stevenson 27-9.
The field hockey team returns home after a four-game road trip to play Shenandoah at Bobcat Stadium on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
