FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State women's soccer team is finding different ways to win soccer games in 2011. The moral of the story is that the Bobcats continue to come out on top. That was evident on Saturday at Bobcat Stadium as sophomore forward Adria Graham scored two goals within the first five minutes and the Bobcats held on to defeat Capital, 2-1.
Box Score
On Friday night, neither the Bobcats (5-0) nor Penn St. Altoona mustered a shot until more than halfway through the first half. One day later, the action started right from the opening kickoff. Graham put the Bobcats ahead, 1-0, in the second minute. It nearly didn't last long, as one minute later, senior goalkeeper Michelle Buckmaster made a diving save to her left to keep the Crusaders off the board.
In the fifth minute, Graham netted her second of the game and fifth of the season off of a centering pass from senior Cassie Donahue.
Graham had two other excellent scoring chances in the first half. In the 18th minute, she rifled a shot that Crusader keeper Maggie Donnellan got some fingers on and deflected wide. In the 33rd minute, she rainbowed a shot that forced Donnellan to retreat to the goal line and knock away.
Donnellan's saves looked even more important in the 69th minute after Kaylee Phillips ripped a ball past Buckmaster after a pretty feed from Katherine Connell to make it 2-1 Frostburg.
The Bobcats managed to hold on as Capital launched 11 shots in the second half to the Bobcats' two. For the match, FSU was outshot, 17-8. Buckmaster became a casualty in the 89th minute when she collided with a Capital forward and was forced to exit. Senior Kristin Prochniak came on to finish the game.
The Bobcats' 5-0 start is their best since starting the 2004 season 5-0-2. Graham's five goals in five games already puts her halfway to her 2010 output when she scored 10 goals as a freshman.
