FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Frostburg State softball team lost a pair of one-run games at Mary Washington today, 4-3 and 7-6. The Bobcats jumped out to leads in the first inning of each game but could not hold off the Eagles in either contest.
In game one, senior
Brooke Tapman (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) led off the game with a single and was brought around on an RBI single by freshman
Caitlin Lovend (Laurel, Md./Reservoir). That would be the only run Frostburg would get until the fifth inning, and in that time Mary Washington put up three runs of their own in the bottom of the first and one in the second off of starting pitcher
Shari Beavers (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill/UMBC).
While Beavers gave up just two hits, four walks aided the Eagles in their rallies. The Bobcats turned to reliever
Lauren Scrivener (Curtis Bay, Md./Eastern Tech) in the third. She came to the rescue, delivering four no-hit innings while striking out three.
She kept the team in the game, and the offense responded with a run in the fifth and sixth inning. Senior
Jacki Lynch (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) singled and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth to make it 4-2. Beavers drew the Bobcats to within 4-3 with a lead-off homer in the sixth, her fourth of the season.
Tapman knocked her second single of the game after one out in the seventh, but the Bobcats could not bring her around.
Sophomore shortstop
Taylor Vandegrift (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) was the offensive leader in game two for Frostburg, going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Her teammates got the Bobcats off to a another quick start, this time posting a pair of runs in the top of the first. Beavers scored on a double by senior
Victoria Krichbaum (Olney, Md./Sherwood) after she singled in junior Jordan Wright (East New Market, Md./North Dorchester/Chesapeak College).
The Bobcats again gave up four runs in the first two innings to find themselves down, 4-2. Lynch cut the deficit in half with an RBI single in the third. Frostburg regained the lead in the top of the fifth after Vandegrift tallied those two RBIs on a double to score junior
Beth Whitehead (Jessup, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) and Lynch. FSU led, 5-4, after 4.5 innings.
After Mary Washington tied it in the bottom of the fifth, Lovend homered in the top of the sixth to again put Frostburg up, 6-5. But the Eagles jumped ahead for the final time, scoring two runs on four hits to overtake the Bobcats and win, 7-6.
On the day, Lovend was 3-for-7 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Tapman was also 3-for-7, adding a walk.
The Bobcats stay in Capital Athletic Conference play when they host York (Pa.) Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. for a doubleheader.
