Game Two Box Score
Salisbury pitching made it a long afternoon for the Bobcats (2-6, 0-2), as Frostburg had just four hits in each contest. In the second inning of game one, the Sea Gulls (12-4, 2-0) took advantage of a Bobcat error to push three unearned runs across. A dropped foul ball down the left-field line with one on and two outs opened the door. The big hit in the inning was a two-run double to center by shortstop Kristin Lord to make it 3-0.
Salisbury added to its lead in the bottom of the third, scoring two more runs on three hits off of starting pitcher
Megan Magee (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Holy Spirit).
An error and a passed ball in the bottom of the fifth put Salisbury ahead, 6-0. Though Magee (2-2) allowed seven hits, only the two third inning runs were earned. So far this season, just five of the 12 runs scored against Magee have been earned in her four appearances.
Frostburg threatened to cut into the lead in its half of the sixth. After one out, junior leftfielder
Beth Whitehead (Jessup, Md./Institute of Notre Dame) bunted for a single. After a second out, junior
Jordan Wright (East New Market, Md./North Dorchester/Chesapeake College) singled to left-center and senior
Brooke Tapman (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) was hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, though, first baseman
Caitlin Lovend (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) flied out to center to end the rally.
Tapman was 1-for-2 in the first game, and shortstop
Taylor Vandegrift (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) accounted for the other Frostburg hit. Salisbury pitcher Erika Brittingham won her eighth game of the season, striking out 13.
The Bobcat bats continued to struggle in game two, as Lovend and sophomore
Megan Foy (Poolesville, Md./Poolesville) each had a pair of hits to account for the team’s total of four. Starting pitcher
Lauren Scrivener (Curtis Bay, Md./Eastern Tech) scattered six hits over her six innings while allowing four runs. Much like game one, errors hurt the team as just one Salisbury run was earned on Scrivener (0-3).
Down 1-0 in the top of the second, Lovend led off with a double. The Bobcats had runners on the corners with two outs, but Scrivener couldn’t help her own cause as she struck out swinging.
That was the best opportunity Frostburg had in the second game. With Salisbury adding an unearned run in the bottom of the second and two more of them in the fourth, the Sea Gulls cruised to the doubleheader sweep behind 10 strikeouts from Kelly Leary.
The Bobcats take a break from conference play and travel to Waynesburg for a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
