SALISBURY, Md. - The Frostburg State men's basketball team earned an important win Saturday afternoon in defeating Capital Athletic Conference rival Salisbury, 75-68. The win pulls the Bobcats into a tie with Salisbury for the sixth-and-final playoff spot in the CAC Tournament with two games to play.
Box Score
Frostburg (10-13, 5-9) led for 37:50 and trailed just once, 2-0, on the afternoon. Leading all scorers - and the four Bobcats in double figures - was sophomore
DeSean Antoine (Odenton, Md./Glen Burnie). He finished with 21 points in 37 minutes. Fellow starters
Brian Anderson (Perry Hall, Md./Eastern Tech) (19 points) and
Maurice Williams (Columbus, Ohio/Pickerington Central) (12 points) joined Antoine in double figures.
With junior
Bradley Nunn (Ft. Washington, Md./Riverdale Baptist) in early foul trouble, senior
Steven Ogg (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) added 11 points and four rebounds off the bench for the Bobcats, including a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line. Ogg was just one cog in the Bobcats' free throw machine Saturday afternoon. Frostburg shot 92.9 percent (26-of-28) from the line. It's the Bobcats' best percentage while shooting at least 20 free throws in the past eight seasons.
The Bobcats were able to keep Salisbury (10-13, 5-9) at arm's length throughout, taking the lead early and holding a 35-27 advantage at the intermission. FSU extended the lead to 57-46 after a pair of Ogg free throws at the 10:04 mark, but the Sea Gulls scratched back with a 9-2 run to make it 59-55 with 7:54 to play. The trio of Anderson, Williams, and Antoine scored the Bobcats' next 12 points as they kept pace with the Sea Gulls' scoring attack. When that run ended, there were only 19 seconds to play and Frostburg had a comfortable 71-64 lead.
The win puts Frostburg in a tie with Salisbury for the final berth in the CAC Tournament. With the teams splitting their two regular season games, it comes down to each team's performance in their final two regular season games next week. Should their results in those games be identical, the final berth will be decided in the CAC's tie-breaking procedures.
Frostburg State heads to Marymount on Wednesday evening at 8:00 p.m.
