FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State women's basketball team defeated Pitt-Greensburg, 67-56, in its season opener Tuesday night at Bobcat Arena. The Bobcats used an 14-2 run late in the second half to break the game open. Junior guard Stephanie Straka scored 19 points - 13 in the second half - and added seven rebounds and seven steals.

After UPG's Casey Stanton hit a layup with 8:33 remaining to put the blue-and-gold Bobcats ahead, 42-38, four Frostburg players combined to score 14 points in the next five minutes. After made jumpers from senior Meische Cox and junior Brynn Arnone, Straka went on a tear. She made all four of her field goal attempts with four steals mixed into that time.
With Frostburg ahead 48-44, with 4:42 remaining, Straka's steal led to a foul and a made free throw from freshman Kyler Redmond. Straka stole the outlet pass and hit a jumper. Redmond returned the favor at 4:03 with a steal of her own that led to a Straka layup to double the Frostburg State lead. Redmond scored seven points and pulled in eight rebounds in her collegiate debut.
Frostburg (1-0) kept things interesting late in the game with underwhelming free-throw shooting. The Bobcats made just 13-of-30 foul shots in the second half, though they did hit on their last five in the last 33 seconds. Sophomore guard Elaina Hummel did her share with a 7-of-8 performance from the line. She finished with 13 points, four steals and two assists. FSU shot 44.1 percent (15-34) from the line for the game.
Freshman guard RJ James was the third Bobcat to finish in double figures with 13 points in 26 minutes. Sophomore forward Lindsey Perkins hauled in seven boards in her first game as a Bobcat.
Frostburg finished the game shooting 40 percent. Greensburg fared no better at 36.2 percent.
The Bobcats again play at home Friday night when they host N.C. Wesleyan in the opening round of the Jim Crawley Tournament. The tip is set for 6:00 p.m. Alvernia and Grove City will follow at 8:00 p.m.
