FROSTBURG, Md. – When the Frostburg State women’s soccer team faced Penn St. Altoona in a non-conference match in September, neither team registered a shot for the first 23 minutes of action. In Saturday’s ECAC South Regional semifinal at Bobcat Stadium, the action picked up considerably faster.
By the 28th minute, the Bobcats had a 3-0 lead en route to a 5-1 win over the Lions. Sophomore forward Adria Graham continued her red-hot streak with two of those first three goals. Both scores came on breakaways, with freshman Chelsea Paskowski springing her in the 12th minute and senior Dorie Gedridge provided the assist in the 28th minute.
Graham had three other breakaway opportunities denied by Penn St. Altoona keeper Lindsay Raspanti. Frostburg’s middle goal in the 22nd minute resulted from one of those chances. After Graham was stopped by Raspanti, she couldn’t corral the ball just outside the left post.
The Lions’ clearing attempt was unsuccessful, however, and sophomore Chelsea Paskowski sent the ball back into the box. Senior Erin Ford fed freshman Stephanie Fazenbaker for the goal that made it 2-0.
Although Altoona’s Meredith Waters answered less than two minutes later to make it 3-1, Fazenbaker surely wasn’t finished.
The freshman broke open the match in the 66th minute off a cross from Gedridge. Just two minutes later, Fazenbaker completed the hat trick by heading home a Liz Seligman corner kick.
Frostburg (16-2-2) outshot Penn St. Altoona, 15-9, with Graham and Fazenbaker accounting for nine of those shots.
The Bobcats will now face Capital Athletic Conference foe Stevenson in the ECAC South Regional Championship tomorrow at noon at Bobcat Stadium. The sides played to a scoreless tie in conference play earlier this season.
