Stevenson Sweeps Volleyball

Owings Mills, Md. - The Frostburg State volleyball team dropped its first conference game of the season as it was swept by Stevenson 14-25, 21-25, and 20-25.  It was Frostburg’s first loss in Capital Athletic Conference play since the Bobcats joined the CAC prior to the 2010 season.

In the first set, Frostburg (10-12, 2-1) was hanging tough down 13-10 until Stevenson (17-2, 3-1) rattled off eight straight points to give the Mustangs a commanding 21-10 lead.  The teams would go back and forth at the end of the set before Stevenson finished off the set 25-14.  The Bobcats jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead in the second set behind kills from Morgan Hoover, Kylie Carrington, and Amber Winterling.  Frostburg would hold the lead for much of the second set until Stevenson scored 11 of the match’s last 13 points to take the set. 

The final set would be very close as well as there were seven lead changes.  The Bobcats would once again jump out to an early lead and a Nicole Absher kill would give Frostburg their biggest lead of the third set at 12-8.  Stevenson would score six straight points to take a 14-12 advantage, before Frostburg would answer back with four straight points of their own behind an ace by Chelsea McCloskey and a kill by Nicole Absher. However, the Bobcats were unable to hold their lead and Stevenson would take the lead for good at 17-16 and went on to win the deciding set 25-20.

Nicole Absher led the way for Frostburg with eight kills and a block.  Kylie Carrington dished out 17 assists to go along with 16 digs.  Maddie White and Amber Winterling would add 16 and 15 digs. 

As a team, the Bobcats struggled attacking at the net as the managed just a .016 hitting percentage on the evening. 

The volleyball team returns to action this Friday at 7:30 p.m. when it takes on Bridgewater at the Neumann Fall Fever Quad-Match.
