The marathon shootout came to an end when St. Mary’s freshman Alex Jones beat senior goalkeeper Michelle Buckmaster in the ninth round to hand the Seahawks a 7-6 penalty kick victory.
With the score tied at two in the fifth round of the shootout, each team scored on its next four attempts to make it 6-6. After a Bobcat miss, Seahawk freshman Alex Jones scored to the right of Buckmaster to advance St. Mary’s into the semifinals of the CAC tournament.
Although the game ended scoreless, the Bobcats had opportunities throughout. Early in the second half, sophomore Chelsea Paskowski took a nice feed from junior Liz Seligman and ripped a shot off the crossbar.
Later in the second, Seligman’s free kick attempt from about 25 yards out on the right side was just high over the leaping Seahawk keeper, Kelsey Wirtz. And with 10 seconds remaining in regulation, sophomore Adria Graham was stopped by Wirtz.
In the first overtime, Graham and senior Cassie Donahue each had chances that were denied. St. Mary’s (5-6-3) had perhaps its best opportunity in the second overtime. After a Bobcats’ turnover in their own box, Seahawk Bridget McGovern banged a shot off the crossbar above Buckmaster.
Frostburg State (14-2-2) outshot the Seahawks, 25-13. Graham led all players with seven shots and six on goal.
Frostburg is now 9-2-2 in games decided by one goal or less. The Bobcats will now wait for a bid to a postseason tournament.
