YORK, Pa. - Senior Dorie Gedridge dealt the final blow to the York Spartans as the Frostburg State women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory on the road in Capital Athletic Conference play. The win keeps the Bobcats in a tie for second place with Stevenson.
Gedridge's goal in the 88th minute capped a back-and-forth affair. The senior converted after a York turnover deep in its zone. She collected it just outside the box, took a few touches and then drilled it into the far left corner behind Spartan keeper Sarah Spanarkel.
With the win, Frostburg (13-2-1, 5-1-1) pulls to just two points behind first place Salisbury with just one conference game remaining. Until Gedridge's strike, though, the placement of the Bobcats in the CAC standings was very much in doubt.
Sophomore Adria Graham opened the scoring in the 35th minute off of a corner kick from sophomore Liz Seligman and a touch from freshman Abby Aposporos. The goal is Graham's 13th of the season, tops in the conference. Graham and sophomore Chelsea Paskowski led the team with three shots, while senior defender Nikki Rieland led with two shots on goal.
Although trailing 1-0 into the half, York (5-10, 5-2) controlled play as the second half started. Senior goalie Michelle Buckmaster made a pair of saves before York's Jordan Snook ripped a one-timer into the upper right corner to tie the score at 1-1 in the 57th minute.
Each team had chances late to pull ahead before Gedridge's goal. In the 77th minute, York's Dani Bock missed just wide right on a header attempt. Four minutes later, Graham sailed a shot high on a quality attempt from just outside the box. And in the 85th minute, York's Lacey Phillips came up empty on an attempt that went outside of the right post.
The teams finished the game tied with 12 shots apiece. Buckmaster made five saves in the win to improve to 12-2-1.
Frostburg completes its regular season at Wesley on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. With a win and some help, the Bobcats have an opportunity to win the CAC regular season championship.
