FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg State men’s soccer team earned a key Capital Athletic Conference victory over Stevenson, 2-1, on a cool, wet afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
Sophomore Bryan Whitmore got the Bobcats (9-1-4, 3-1-2) on the board early. With just a little more than five minutes gone by in the first period, Whitmore corralled a loose ball and launched a shot from about 20 yards out. The wet ball went through the arms of Stevenson keeper Ryan Flannelly to give the Bobcats the 1-0 lead.
Frostburg controlled the ball for most of the half as they attempted seven shots to Stevenson’s three. Abiye Jack made a great save on a Ryan Pierce shot with 1:19 left to play in the first half to keep the score 1-0 at the break.
Yacob Kahsai increased the Frostburg lead to 2-0 fourteen minutes into the second half. Kahsai received a pass from Scott Wasser right in front of the goal and easily punched it home.
The Mustangs would answer back about eight minutes later. Yianni Sarioglou got the rebound off of an Andrew Garner shot and lofted the ball over the head of Jack to make the score 2-1.
Stevenson made one last charge to tie the score when the ball squirted away from Jack and the Bobcat goal was left wide open. The Mustangs were unable to control the loose ball and Frostburg ran out the clock for the win.
The win gave the Bobcats their third conference victory and now puts them in third place in the CAC, behind Mary Washington and Salisbury. Frostburg returns to action on Saturday at Bobcat Stadium for another big conference game against York (Pa.) at 5:00 p.m.
