FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State field hockey team hung tough against No. 18-ranked Mary Washington, but couldn’t keep pace with the Eagles in the second half as they fell, 6-2.
Mary Washington (12-4, 3-2) jumped out to an early lead in the 11th minute when Morgan Jones scored the first of her three goals on the afternoon. Two minutes later, Jones assisted on the Eagles second goal as she found Kaitlyn Ripley to make the score 2-0.
The Bobcat offense gained some momentum midway through the first half as Becky Randel scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season from the top of the circle in the 18th minute.
Mary Washington came out firing in the second half as they scored the first three goals. Caitlin Baker tallied the first goal, with Kaitlyn Ripley and Morgan Jones both adding their second goals of the game to make the score 5-1.
Chelsea Smith scored the Bobcats’ final goal as she blew past two Mary Washington defenders before faking out the Eagle keeper to make the score 5-2 with three minutes to play in the game.
Morgan Jones completed her hat trick and ended the scoring with 53 seconds to play.
Mary Washington dominated the game offensively. The Eagles held a 50-14 advantage in shots and an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners. UMW goalie Emily Badis made seven saves to earn the victory, while Frostburg’s Maggie Edwards made 26 stops including 19 in the second half.
The Bobcats (5-11, 1-4) continue their conference schedule when they hit the road to take on York College (Pa.) at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
