Women Earn 10th Win of the Season with 65-57 Defeat of Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md. - The Frostburg State University women's basketball team outlasted a fiesty Stevenson squad for a 65-57 win in Capital Athletic Conference basketball action, Saturday. The first half had seven lead changes but the Bobcats used a pair of runs for their 10th win of the season.

The seven lead changes in the opening half occured over the first 12 minutes of action until a 7-0 run put FSU (10-10, 7-4) up for good, 24-17. The Mustangs (1-17, 0-10) narrowed the deficit to one point, 26-25, with 2:28 left, but Frostburg collected a 10-3 run over the remainder of the half and led by eight at the break.

The Bobcats pushed their lead to 10 points, 42-32, early in the second half, but Stevenson again surged back and trailed by just two, 51-49, with 5:51 to play.

FSU took control over the next two minutes with a 9-1 run that boosted their advantage to 10 points, 60-50. Stevenson cut it to four points inside the final 30 seconds, however, Frostburg sealed the win with four free throws down the stretch.

The Bobcats shot 50.0 percent in the first half behind 14-of-28 attempts and they were nearly perfect from the free throw line (7-of-8). FSU struggled in the second, making just nine baskets, but used a 10-of-17 effort (58.8%) from the foul line to earn the win.

Sophomore Stephanie Straka (Jerome, Pa./Conemaugh Township) led all players with 19 points, including 11 in the second half. Senior Elizabeth Carrington (Clinton, Md./Oxon Hill) finished with 15 points behind 9-of-11 (81.8%) free throws.

The Bobcat defense held SU to just 33.3 percent shooting on 20-of-60 attempts for the game. JaQelia Conley and Kristen Steiner led the hosts with 12 points each.

Frostburg will try for its third-straight win when it welcomes Hood to Bobcat Arena this Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
