FROSTBURG, Md. - The Frostburg women's basketball team won its third-straight Capital Athletic Conference contest Wednesday night, defeating Stevenson, 55-49.
Box Score
The Bobcats (7-9, 4-3) were led by senior forward
Mercedes White's (Bowie, Md./Bowie) 18 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. White went 9-of-12 from the floor, consistently driving open lanes to the rim.
The game was still very much in doubt late, as the lead changed hands six times in the final 3:12. The catalyst down the stretch for Frostburg was senior forward
Lisa Byer (Johnstown, Pa./Conemaugh). With the Bobcats trailing, 44-43, Byer nailed a three with just over three minutes to play.
The teams volleyed back and forth, and Stevenson (1-12, 0-6) pulled back in front after a pair of free throws from Jaquelia Conley with 1:14 remaining. Byer went back to work, nailing another three on Frostburg's ensuing possession with 56 seconds to play. That shot proved to be the game-winner, as sophomore guard Stephanie Straka (Jerome, Pa./Conemaugh Township) and freshman guard
Elaina Hummel (Huntington, Pa./Southern Huntington) knocked down four free throws to reach the final score.
Byer finished the night with nine points on 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Straka finished with seven points and six boards, while Hummel had nine points and six rebounds. Senior center
Mindy Sharp (Marlinton, W.Va./Pocahontas County) had six point and seven rebounds, breaking her consecutive game streak of double-digit rebounds at seven. The more important streak, however, continues as the Bobcats move over .500 in conference play.
The Bobcats head to St. Mary's (Md.) for a CAC tilt Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
