Wharton Scores Two as Bobcats Slip Past Mary Washington in OT

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Amanda Wharton (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) scored two more goals and the Frostburg State women's soccer team slipped past Mary Washington 2-1 in overtime in Capital Athletic Conference action, Saturday.

The Bobcats improved their record to 8-1 on the season and 3-0 in the conference while the Eagles fell to 5-2-1 and 2-1 in the CAC.

FSU dominated the game offensively and scored on its only shot attempt in overtime for its fifth-straight win. Wharton has now scored in each of the last seven games and eight of FSU's nine games this fall.

The Eagles scored on the game's first shot just 5:45 into play. Chrissy Reardon put the hosts ahead 1-0 with a goal off a feed from Amy Olson.

The Bobcats responded from the early deficit with seven first-half shots but were unable to find the net as UMW keeper Tina Brehn made four saves in the first half.

The Bobcats turned up the heat in the second attempting 10 more shots before finally breaking through in the 74th minute. Junior Cassie Donahue (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) found Wharton for the Bobcats first goal in the 74th minute.

Frostburg State took five more shots over the final 15 minutes of the second half but Brehm turned turned away a pair to send the game into an extra frame.

Three minutes into OT, Wharton scored her 15th goal of the season and sixth game-winner to send FSU into a victory celebration.

Bobcat keeper Michelle Buckmaster (St. Leonard, Md./Calvert) made four saves but left the game just a minute following Wharton's first goal. Junior Kristin Prochniak (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) played the final 18 minutes in net for the Bobcats and earned the win, her first of the season.

The Bobcats host McDaniel in non-conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 7:00 pm.
