Volleyball Rebounds With Two Wins Over Salisbury and Penn State Behrend

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State volleyball team got back on the winning track with a pair of wins over Salisbury and Penn State Behrend, Saturday. The Bobcats needed four games for a 3-1 win over SU and later swept PSB by a 3-0 count.

Heading in today’s tri-match, the Bobcats (15-2, 1-0) had dropped their last two matches, but got back on the winning with the pair of wins today. FSU downed the Sea Gulls (10-5, 1-1) 25-17, 25-21, 19-25 and 25-19).

In game one, the Bobcats used a 6-0 run to turn a two-point lead into an eight-point cushion and a 13-5 edge. SU narrowed the deficit to five points several times in the game but FSU closed out the first set with a 5-2 run for a 25-17 win.

The second set was closer than the first as neither team was able to take more than a four-point lead. Salisbury opened a 9-6 lead and later held an 11-7 edge. Frostburg narrowed the gap to two points (19-17) late in the contest and evened the score at 21-21. The Bobcats captured game two with a 4-0 spurt to close out the set.

Salisbury captured game three 25-19 behind a late surge. The Sea Gulls led 14-13 and opened a five-point lead with a 5-1 run. The Bobcats cut the deficit to 20-18, but SU used another 5-1 run for the third set victory.

In the fourth and decisive set, FSU captured a pair of six-point leads (11-5 and 19-13) and tried to run away for the win. The Sea Gulls battled back both times and tied the contest at 19-19, but FSU again used a late game 6-0 surge to close out the match.

Seniors Sarah Stephens (Oakland, Md./Southern Garrett) and Jamie Thomas (Laurel, Md./Reservoir) each posted double-doubles for the Bobcats. Stephens finished with 12 kills and 15 digs while Thomas posted a game-high 15 kills and 12 digs.

Junior setter Kylie Carrington (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) handed out 40 assists for the second-straight match and picked up six digs. Junior sisters Amber Winterling and Sabrina Winterling (Glenelg, Md./Glenelg) totaled 16 kills and four blocks. Amber had nine kills and nine digs while Sabrina added seven kills.

Senior libero Brittany McVearry (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) led with a game-high 19 digs

In the second match, the Bobcats needed just three sets to get past Penn State Behrend, 25-12, 25-18 and 25-23.

The Bobcats blew open the first game with a 9-1 run in the middle of the contest for a 19-7 edge. The Lions (6-7) brought the score within 10 (21-11), but the Bobcats closed out the set with a 4-1 run for the 25-12 win.

PSB opened a 6-2 lead early in the second game, but Frostburg slowly inched its way back and trailed by just one (10-9), before an 11-4 run put the Bobcats in control (20-14). FSU earned the 25-18 win after a 5-2 run kept Penn State from making a late charge.

Frostburg State rallied for the third set and match win after the Lions took a 19-15 lead, backed by a 4-0 run. FSU evened the game with its own 4-0 run at 19 apiece and the teams traded a few points for a 21-21 tie. The Bobcats surged ahead, 24-21, but PSB narrowed the gap to one with back-to-back points. The Bobcats earned the final point to close out the match for a 25-13 victory.

Stephens and Sabrina Winterling led the way 12 kills each. Stephens added five digs while Winterling added 14 digs and three blocks.

Thomas and Carrington filled up the stats sheet in the win over Behrend. Thomas posted nine kills, two aces, two assists, one block and one dig while Carrington recorded 16 assists, three digs, two kills and one block.

Amber Winterling turned in nine kills, one ace, two blocks and five digs and McVearry posted a team-high 17 digs.

Junior Christine Barnes (Williamsport, Md./Williamsport) handed out a career-high 25 assists and posted three digs while freshman Victoria Veirs (Germantown, Md./Good Council) posted three kills, one assist and two blocks.

The Bobcats return to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 29 when they host Stevenson at 7:00 pm.
